Family Fitness Tips
Time to get your family on the move to better physical fitness? To get started, schedule a time or two a week for your family to do physical activity together. Check out what free and low-cost physical activity areas are near your home, such as parks, bike and hiking trails, tennis courts and swimming pools.
Consider adopting some of these activity suggestions from Callen Fitness and CallenFitness.com:
- Conduct a Family Olympics where each family member organizes an event.
- Get a pedometer for every family member and see who can log in the most steps.
- Sign the family up for a one mile walk/5K.
- Play a “hot potato” game of Frisbee before dinner.
- Take the kids to a miniature golf course.
- Go on a nature hike.
- Have the kids demonstrate to visiting relatives how to play their favorite sport.
- Set up a fitness obstacle course in the backyard.
- Play catch with water balloons.
Winter weather or school vacations mean the kids are stuck inside for the day? Pick from some of these indoor activities:
- Create a family video of exercise routines.
- Plan a family bowling night.
- Host a “Dance Fever” contest.
- Play “Twister” or another active indoor game.
Any fitness activity is more appealing when it comes with a healthy dose of laughter, so whatever you or your children choose to do, keep it fun for the whole family!
